Our Mother of Nurture (Sweet Mother) is a contemporary reimagining of maternal devotion through an African spiritual lens. This original painting forms part of our ongoing dialogue with classical art history, drawing from Renaissance compositions such as Michelangelo’s depictions of the Virgin Mary with the Christ Child and St John the Baptist. This original painting was commissioned by BBC Arts for the docuseries Renaissance: Blood and Beauty
At the centre of this work is Yemoja, the nurturing mother of all Orisas in the Yoruba spiritual tradition, portrayed cradling and nursing one of the Ibeji, the sacred twins.
This is a one-of-a-kind original artwork.
