Àyàngalú is a tribute to the first Yoruba drummer, who after his death was deified and honoured as an Orisa. This original painting was commissioned by The Fitzwilliam Museum, Cambridge, and celebrates the sacred role of rhythm in Yoruba spirituality.
Regarded as the patron of all drummers, Àyàngalú’s rhythms are believed to summon the Orisas, communicate with the spirit world, and preserve generations of oral history. In Yoruba, the word Ayan means drummer, signifying not only a title but a divine lineage.
The composition pays homage to the spiritual and cultural significance of drumming within Yoruba cosmology, capturing both the movement and reverence that surround this sacred art form.
