Oya, the Orisa of storms and lightning was initially married to Ogun, the Orisa of war and iron, she eventually betrayed him by falling in love with his rival, Sango, the Orisa of thunder and lightning.

Oya and Sango were counterparts: he is the thunder that reaches Earth and she is the lightning that electrifies the sky. Legends say that their love story, full of passion and betrayal, ignited the bloodiest wars in the Orisa Kingdom.

Additionally, two of Sango’s other wives are portrayed in this painting - Osun the Orisa of sweet waters and fertility is represented as a peacock, and Oba, the Orisa of domesticity as the river beneath Sango’s feet.

This painting was inspired by the painting “Perseus turning Phineas and his followers to stone” by Luca Giordano at The National Gallery
