From the Chokwe peoples of Angola and neighbouring regions of the Democratic Republic of the Congo and Zambia.

Chokwe masks are made to be worn in masquerade, where the face, costume, movement, and music work together to create a public character. 

Mwana Pwo (“young woman”) is one of the best-known Chokwe masquerade figures. Carved by men and traditionally danced by a male performer, it presents ideals of womanhood and honours women, including mothers and founding female ancestors in a matrilineal society.

The features often associated with Mwana Pwo include a composed expression, partially closed eyes, facial scarification/tattoo patterns, and an elaborate coiffure. When performed, the mask would be accompanied by a full costume rather than appearing alone.
