From Bantu-speaking communities across Central and Southern Africa.
Bantu knots are a sculptural style created by twisting sections of hair and coiling them into small knots across the head. Variations appear across many communities and regions, with distinct approaches to parting, size, and placement.
Historically, hairstyles functioned as social language. Bantu knots were often worn for ceremonies and significant moments, and could signal age, status, or life stages.
Alongside symbolism, the style is practical: it protects the ends, helps retain moisture, and suits hot climates. When undone, the coils can leave a defined curl pattern.
This is a one-of-a-kind original artwork.
