The Thunder and The Storm is a dynamic reimagining of divine rivalry and passion. This original painting forms part of our ongoing exploration of mythological narratives through a classical art lens, drawing inspiration from Luca Giordano’s Perseus Turning Phineas and his Followers to Stone, part of the collection at The National Gallery. This original painting was commissioned by The National Gallery as part of the NG200 programme.
At the centre of this work are three powerful Orisas; Oya, the Orisa of storms and transformation; Sango, the Orisa of thunder; and Ogun, the Orisa of war and iron. Once married to Ogun, Oya ultimately falls for his rival, Sango, sparking a love triangle that legends say ignited some of the fiercest battles among the Orisa. Oya and Sango are depicted as elemental counterparts; he, the thunder that strikes the earth, and she, the lightning that electrifies the sky.
Also present are two of Sango's other wives: Osun, the Orisa of sweet waters and fertility, symbolised by the peacock, and Oba, the Orisa of domesticity, represented as the river flowing beneath Sango’s feet.
This is a one-of-a-kind original artwork.
