Yemoja is revered as a maternal orisa associated with nurture, protection, and the life-giving power of water. In Yorùbá spirituality she is widely honoured as a motherly presence within the orisa world, a figure through whom care, endurance, and spiritual authority converge.

At the centre of this painting, Yemoja cradles and nurses one the Ibeji, the sacred twins in Yorùbá tradition.

This composition is inspired by Michelangelo’s The Virgin and Child with the Infant St John the Baptist (the Taddei Tondo), reinterpreted through Yorùbá cosmology.
